52 PRIME Speaking Tips – #02 of 52

Don’t Perspire, you too can Inspire.

Many speakers often ask me “Do you have a process that you use to Inspire your audience?”

Well, there are few.

Today you will receive a THREE step process to inspire your audience and the FOUR essential components you need for your inspirational speech.

I devised this process after a long time as a speaker.  Now, I follow these exact same steps for my inspirational speeches and motivational conversations! It works like magic!!

Most speakers ignore this need of the audience and end up delivering speeches that does not resonate.

The THREE step process I have devised is the NOW-WOW-HOWTM process.

The FOUR essential components in an inspirational speech are Connect-Convince-Elaborate-Challenge

1. NOW

  • Connect with their needs. Remind the audience about their fears and goals.
  • Convince them about
    • what they are lacking NOW,
    • what is blocking them?
    • what is blinding them?
  • Look out for a future tip on exactly how to connect with your audience

2. WOW

  • Tell them the attractive(WOW) end result they will get when they adopt your idea.
  • Elaborate on the benefits of end results(WOW).
    • What do they get in your promised land?
    • Needless to say, the benefits need to be appealing to their needs, assuaging their fears or achieving their goals.

3. HOW

  • The audience needs to know the way (HOW) to your promised land (WOW).
    • What do they need to do?
    • Which path do they need to take? Show them the HOW.
    • Needless to say the HOW should be clear, concise and accurate. (It does not have to be super easy, it has to be achievable).
    • Throw a subtle Challenge to them (a nudge, some motivation), so that they feel the urge to give your idea a try.

Consider this metaphor. Imagine your listener is stranded on an island (NOW) then you show them the mainland(WOW). Then you show them the bridge to the mainland(HOW). The shorter the bridge appears, the more appealing your solution becomes and the more inspired they will be to act.

Isn’t that simple and straightforward? Try it out. When you follow the NOW-WOW-HOWTM process, your audience will be inspired to take action!

By the way, this is also the fundamental secret of  leaders.

Leaders inspire action, Managers tell people what to do.

Now, wouldn’t you like to try this THREE step process for your next inspirational speech or conversation? Wouldn’t you like to follow this process to motivate your team, your child or a friend?

Delve on this process before you write your next speech or deliver your next talk and you will be pleasantly surprised with the results you get.

Most speakers do not follow these steps and wonder why they can’t inspire their audience.

When speakers fail to follow the steps, they end up delivering a forceful or hammering speech.

When you follow these fundamentals, you are on your way to be a speaker that audiences like to hear and rehire to inspire.

Until next week, read and reflect on this tip.

In the next tip, we will go through the most important component of your speech (which happens to be the most forgotten!)

Please leave your comment below for this week’s tip!

  1. Agree with –> “Leaders inspire and Managers tell people what to do”

    Regarding –> NOW-WOW-HOW –> I find it little difficult : )

  2. Thank you Sudarshan. Glad you liked it.

The most important pre-requisite for the effectiveness of the NOW-WOW-HOW process is the connection.
People need to “buy you” before they “buy your message”. As you might have noticed, in speaking, likeability, credibility and sincerity is paramount.

Another point on the process is ( an extract from the tip above. )
◾Needless to say the HOW should be clear, concise and accurate. (It does not have to be super easy, it has to be achievable).
In other words the HOW should be clear, accurate, credible and achievable – I would add ( SHOW )HOW.

By the way, NOW-WOW-HOW is only one of the techniques to inspire. There are many ways to reach the same destination.
In a future tip, you will learn how to strengthen the connection with your audience and make your speech resonate with them.

Do try out this technique and let me know your findings.

    Thank you.

  3. sir
I think this Now-wow-how technique will really work and will be effective because people are much concerned about themselves…..
    Thank you

    • It is true that most people are more concerned about themselves Loui. However, I wouldn’t generalize that. The key is that, we sometimes need a purpose and an assurance of result to act. Use this technique wisely. If our intent is right, this technique can be used to persuade someone to act. Make sure the gap between the NOW and WOW is wide and the HOW is an short, safe and sure bridge.

      Keep speaking up!

  4. Thanks Manoj! These are definitely an amazing summary and sounds like your experience!

Now the trouble is how we can actually make content that sounds that convincing and delivery to let them buy the message.

For example, if i am 120kg before and 75kg now. It’ll probably give them a (1) issue which they have, (2) WOW point and (3) they probably would believe the method i share. But if it’s something motivational… how can we be convincing if there’s not a valuable thing that we can WOW them with? (Example: Being successful in business, losing weight, successful speaker, etc).

    • Dear Von,
The most important pre-requisite for the effectiveness of the NOW-WOW-HOW process is the connection.
People need to “buy you” before they “buy your message”. As you might have noticed, in speaking, likeability, credibility and sincerity is paramount.

What would motivate them? Over the years I have realized people most people are moved by one of two things. Enjoying Gain or Avoiding Pain.

Now, what’s Gain and Pain? Is it just about making money and losing money. NO.

Again, different people are motivated by one of the following 10 factors (5 times 2)
PROFIT – possibility of profit versus avoidance of loss
PRESTIGE – boost of self-esteem, status, fame, prominence versus loss of face
PRODUCTIVITY – do more in less time versus loss of time, energy, effort
PLEASURE – happiness, joy, merriment versus stress, frustration, disappointment
POWER – possibility of increasing power versus possibility of losing power

You appeal to these interests, you would more effectively connect I notice that you will be attending my Accelerated Speaking Program – we will go through some specific speeches and videos to show how fabulous speakers appeal to these interests to inspire their audiences to take action!

Do try out this and let me know your findings.

  5. Dear Manoj !!

Truly awesome point. Really great. I am re-discovering the truth. I am second time expressing my thankful appreciation for point number TIP number 2 !!!

  6. Really amazing point to follow. When I go for my next marketing presentation, I will adopt this to catch the customers. The “Leaders inspire action, Managers tell people what to do” is a wonderful reality.
